Wilcannia is a town of approximately 650 people. It is at the centre of the Central Darling Shire, the largest in NSW at around 53,000 sq Km.

 

The town has at times been given a reputation which it does not deserve.  If you are not sure, please call us and let us put your mind at ease.

 

Wilcannia in years past played a major part in the river trade from the region to Adelaide and many of the sandstone buildings of the time still stand.

 

As well as  being an ideal location from which to visit many of the national parks in the area we can also direct you to some short tracks along the river close to town where you will see magnificent stands of river red gums and the river as it was a hundred years ago.

 

Whilst in town take the time to visit the Rural Transaction and Information  centre where you may chance upon displays of local art or other historical displays.

 

There has been a gradual resurgence of local Aboriginal artists in the town with a distinctive style based on the traditional designs of the Paarkantji people (People Of The River)
